Stratum corneum keratin protein refers to the family of keratins that are the primary structural proteins within the outermost layer of human skin, known as the stratum corneum. These proteins are essential for forming a resilient barrier that protects underlying tissues from environmental insults, dehydration, and pathogens. The stratum corneum is composed mainly of dead cells called corneocytes, which are densely packed with keratin filaments. Keratin in this layer helps maintain skin hydration by preventing water loss (transepidermal water loss) and contributes to the mechanical strength and elasticity of skin. Alterations or mutations affecting expression levels or structure/organization of these keratins can compromise epidermal integrity.
