Streptococcus is a genus of Gram-positive, coccus-shaped bacteria within the family Streptococcaceae that are characterized by their growth in chains or pairs. These organisms are clinically significant human pathogens, with specific species such as Streptococcus pyogenes and Streptococcus pneumoniae responsible for a diverse array of conditions including pharyngitis, pneumonia, and invasive infections like sepsis (StatPearls, 2023). In a pharmacological context, 'Streptococcus' represents a biological organism rather than a specific molecular target like a receptor or enzyme. Antibiotics exert their therapeutic effects by binding to specific molecular targets within the bacteria, such as penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) to inhibit cell wall synthesis or the 50S ribosomal subunit to arrest protein production (NIH, 2022). Because it is a genus containing numerous species and thousands of potential proteins, it is classified as an incorrect target name when a specific molecular entity is required for drug-target interaction analysis.
