Overview

Streptococcus agalactiae capsular polysaccharide serotype V is a complex carbohydrate structure located on the outermost surface of Group B Streptococcus (GBS) bacteria. It serves as a critical virulence factor by providing a physical barrier that inhibits C3b deposition and subsequent opsonophagocytic killing by host immune cells, thereby facilitating bacterial survival and dissemination. Serotype V is one of the most prevalent serotypes associated with invasive GBS disease in both neonates and non-pregnant adults globally. As a primary target for vaccine development, this polysaccharide is often conjugated to carrier proteins like CRM197 to enhance immunogenicity and induce long-lasting T-cell dependent immune responses. Therapeutic strategies focus on maternal immunization to provide transplacental transfer of protective antibodies to the fetus, aiming to prevent early-onset and late-onset neonatal sepsis and meningitis.
