Streptococcus mutans Biofilm (S. mutans Biofilm)

Target
S. mutans Biofilm
Molecular classification
Extracellular matrix, Microbial community
01

Overview

Streptococcus mutans biofilm is a structured microbial community formed by *S. mutans* on tooth surfaces, embedded in a self-produced extracellular matrix. This biofilm is a primary factor in the development of dental caries (tooth decay), as it enables *S. mutans* to adhere to teeth, metabolize dietary sugars, and produce acids that demineralize enamel. The biofilm formation process involves initial attachment, microcolony formation, maturation, regulation by multiple genes and quorum sensing mechanisms. Key molecular components include glucosyltransferases, fructosyltransferase, sortase A, Antigen I/II (P1/spaA), and LuxS. Factors like saliva and oxygen tension modulate biofilm development. Its resilience makes *S. mutans* difficult to eradicate, contributing to caries and complicating treatment strategies.
