Streptococcus oralis is a Gram-positive, alpha-hemolytic bacterium that serves as a primary commensal inhabitant of the human oral cavity and a member of the viridans group streptococci (StatPearls, 2023). It is recognized as one of the initial colonizers of the tooth surface, where it plays a critical role in the formation of dental biofilms by providing attachment sites for other microbes (Journal of Bacteriology, 2010). Although typically benign, S. oralis can transition into an opportunistic pathogen, particularly in individuals with underlying heart conditions or suppressed immune systems, leading to infective endocarditis and bacteremia (Clinical Microbiology Reviews, 2002). The organism is also known for its ability to produce hydrogen peroxide, which helps it compete with other oral bacteria (Microbiology, 2011). Clinical management of S. oralis infections usually relies on beta-lactam antibiotics like penicillin, though increasing resistance levels are a growing concern in clinical settings (Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, 2016). Consequently, susceptibility testing is often required to guide effective treatment for systemic infections caused by this species (Journal of Clinical Microbiology, 2018).
Antibiotics targeting Streptococcus oralis typically function by inhibiting bacterial cell wall peptidoglycan synthesis (e.g., beta-lactams and glycopeptides) or by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit to inhibit protein synthesis (e.g., macrolides and lincosamides).
