Target intelligence / Profile preview

Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus)

Target
pneumococcus
Molecular classification
Bacterium, Gram-positive bacterium, Facultative anaerobe
01

Overview

Streptococcus pneumoniae is a Gram-positive, lancet-shaped, facultative anaerobic bacterium and the primary cause of pneumococcal disease. It colonizes the human nasopharynx and can cause a range of infections, including pneumonia, meningitis, bacteremia, otitis media, and sinusitis. Virulence is primarily attributed to the polysaccharide capsule. Transmission occurs via respiratory droplets.

Other names
Pneumococcus

Mechanism of action

Antibiotic mechanisms vary (e.g., inhibition of cell wall synthesis, protein synthesis, DNA replication); Vaccines stimulate an immune response to prevent infection.
