Overview

The capsular polysaccharide (CPS) of *Streptococcus pneumoniae* is a high-molecular-weight, surface-exposed carbohydrate polymer that forms the outermost layer of the bacterium. It is a critical virulence factor, protecting the organism from host immune mechanisms. There are 98 recognized serotypes, each with unique chemical structures and immunological properties. The CPS is the primary target for current pneumococcal vaccines, and widespread vaccine use has altered disease epidemiology through serotype replacement.
