The target consists of capsular polysaccharide antigens from selected Streptococcus pneumoniae serotypes covalently linked to CRM197 protein, a non-toxic derivative of diphtheria toxin. This conjugation transforms the T cell-independent polysaccharide antigen into a T cell-dependent antigen, enhancing immunogenicity and long-lasting protective immune responses, especially in young children. These conjugates are used as the active component in pneumococcal conjugate vaccines to prevent invasive pneumococcal diseases by inducing production of anti-capsular antibodies that mediate opsonization and clearance of bacteria.
