The 10-serotype variant specifically refers to the antigens from serotypes 1, 4, 5, 6B, 7F, 9V, 14, 18C, 19F, and 23F, which are common causes of invasive disease globally [1]. These antigens are used in conjugate vaccines, where they are chemically linked to a carrier protein (such as Protein D from non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae) to enhance immunogenicity, particularly in infants [2]. Upon administration, the immune system recognizes these polysaccharides and generates serotype-specific antibodies that facilitate bacterial clearance via opsonophagocytosis [3]. This targeted approach effectively prevents life-threatening infections including pneumonia, meningitis, and febrile bacteremia [1].
