Streptococcus pneumoniae capsular polysaccharide serotype

Overview

Streptococcus pneumoniae capsular polysaccharide serotype refers to the unique antigenic structure of the capsular polysaccharide that surrounds each Streptococcus pneumoniae bacterium. More than 100 distinct serotypes exist, each defined by the specific sugar composition and linkages in their polysaccharide capsule[3][7][8]. The capsule is the primary virulence factor, protecting the bacterium from phagocytosis by the host immune system and determining its ability to colonize and cause invasive disease[3][4]. Some serotypes are highly associated with invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD), while others are more associated with carriage or non-invasive infections[2]. Serotype identification is critical in epidemiology, vaccine design, and immunology[4][7]. Polysaccharide-based vaccines target the most prevalent or virulent serotypes, but vaccine pressure leads to serotype replacement and shifts in disease epidemiology[1][4][9].
