Target intelligence / Profile preview
Streptococcus pneumoniae capsular polysaccharide serotype 19F is a complex carbohydrate polymer that encapsulates the 19F strain of the pneumococcus bacterium. This polysaccharide acts as a primary virulence factor by providing a physical barrier that prevents host immune cells from performing phagocytosis and inhibits complement deposition (Source: PubMed, PMID: 11514318). Serotype 19F is frequently associated with invasive pneumococcal disease and is a common cause of respiratory infections and meningitis globally (Source: CDC, Pneumococcal Disease). Because of its clinical significance, it is a key antigenic component in both pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) and pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccines (PPSVs) (Source: WHO, Pneumococcal vaccines). These vaccines trigger the production of protective antibodies that bind to the polysaccharide, allowing the immune system to identify and destroy the bacteria (Source: StatPearls, Pneumococcal Vaccine). Serotype 19F is also notable for its frequent association with multi-drug resistance, making vaccine-mediated prevention a critical public health strategy (Source: PubMed, PMID: 22412062).
Induction of serotype-specific opsonophagocytic antibodies that facilitate bacterial recognition and clearance by the host immune system; in conjugate vaccines, the polysaccharide is linked to a carrier protein to elicit a T-cell dependent immune response, which is essential for long-term memory and efficacy in infants (Source: StatPearls, Pneumococcal Vaccine; PubMed, PMID: 24512656).
