Streptococcus pneumoniae polysaccharide antigens are complex carbohydrates on the bacterial surface, primarily capsular polysaccharides (CPS), that act as virulence factors by inhibiting phagocytosis. Over 90 serotypes exist, each with a unique CPS structure.
