Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 10A capsular polysaccharide (CPS10A)

The Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 10A capsular polysaccharide is a complex carbohydrate polymer that forms the outermost protective layer of the S. pneumoniae bacterium. It serves as a primary virulence factor by shielding the pathogen from the host's immune system, specifically by inhibiting opsonization and subsequent phagocytosis by immune cells like neutrophils. Serotype 10A is a clinically significant variant associated with invasive pneumococcal diseases, including pneumonia, meningitis, and bacteremia, particularly in older adults and those with underlying health conditions. Due to its role in disease, this polysaccharide is used as a target antigen in several multivalent vaccines, such as the 23-valent polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23) and the 20-valent conjugate vaccine (PCV20). Vaccination induces the production of serotype-specific antibodies that neutralize the capsule's protective effect, allowing the immune system to effectively identify and eliminate the bacteria.
