Target intelligence / Profile preview
Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 18C is one of over ninety known pneumococcal types classified based on their distinct cell wall capsular polysaccharides. The capsule enables immune evasion by inhibiting phagocytosis. Serotype prevalence varies geographically and temporally but historically includes some strains responsible for invasive disease—especially before widespread vaccination programs. The type-specific capsular polysaccharides, such as that from *S. pneumoniae* type 18C, are key antigens targeted by both diagnostic assays measuring antibody responses and multivalent pneumococcal vaccines like PPSV23 and PCV13.[3][5] These antigens elicit T-cell independent humoral immunity characterized primarily by IgG production.[5] The inclusion of this serotype’s antigen in current vaccines reflects its historical role among common causes of severe disease prior to routine immunization.[6] While “S. pneumoniae serotype 18C” itself is not a druggable molecular target like an enzyme or receptor, its unique surface carbohydrate structure serves as an important immunological marker for both diagnosis and prevention strategies against pneumococcal disease.[1][7]
Vaccines containing the type 18C capsular polysaccharide induce production of type-specific IgG antibodies, leading to opsonization and enhanced phagocytosis/destruction by immune cells.
