The capsular polysaccharide of Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 19A is a complex carbohydrate structure that forms the outer capsule of the bacterium. It is a key virulence factor, protecting the bacterium from phagocytosis and enabling it to cause invasive diseases. It consists of repeating trisaccharide units of rhamnose, N-acetyl-mannosamine, and glucose. Serotype 19A has become a prevalent cause of IPD, especially after the introduction of vaccines targeting other serotypes. Purified capsular polysaccharide is used as an antigenic component in pneumococcal vaccines.
