Overview

The capsular polysaccharide of Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 19F is a complex carbohydrate polymer that constitutes the outermost protective layer of the bacterium [PubMed: 10854151]. It functions as a critical virulence factor by inhibiting opsonophagocytosis and protecting the pathogen from the host innate immune response [PubMed: 1593153]. Serotype 19F is frequently associated with invasive pneumococcal diseases such as meningitis and bacteremia, as well as non-invasive infections like otitis media, particularly in pediatric populations [PubMed: 22412050]. Due to its high prevalence and pathogenicity, it is a standard component in both pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) and pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccines (PPSVs) [CDC]. These vaccines utilize the purified polysaccharide, often conjugated to a carrier protein, to elicit a protective humoral immune response, leading to the production of antibodies that facilitate bacterial killing [PubMed: 24106296].
