Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 23F refers to one of more than ninety known capsular types (“serotypes”) of the gram-positive bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae. The classification “serotype 23F” is based on the structure of its surface-expressed capsular polysaccharide. This particular serotype has been frequently associated with invasive diseases such as bacteremia, meningitis, and respiratory tract infections in both children and adults worldwide. It remains one of the most prevalent disease-causing types globally. The capsule enables evasion from host immunity but also serves as an immunogen in current multivalent pneumococcal vaccines like PPSV23. Serotypes including 19A, 19F, and especially 23F, have shown significant rates of antibiotic resistance in various regions, making them important targets for surveillance programs and vaccine development efforts.
