Target intelligence / Profile preview
Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 6A capsular polysaccharide (CPS 6A) is a complex carbohydrate polymer that forms the outer capsule of S. pneumoniae serotype 6A. It is a major virulence factor, protecting the bacterium from phagocytosis and complement-mediated killing. CPS 6A is a key target for pneumococcal conjugate vaccines such as PCV13 and PCV21, which induce antibodies that promote opsonization and clearance of the bacteria. The unique structure of CPS 6A, determined by its cps locus, distinguishes it antigenically and is crucial for vaccine efficacy.
