Overview

Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 6B is one variant within over one hundred known capsular types (“serotypes”) defined by differences in their surface polysaccharide capsule structure. The capsule serves as a major virulence factor by protecting bacteria from phagocytosis and interfering with complement-mediated clearance mechanisms in humans. Serogroup 6 includes several related types—most notably, types 6A and 6B—which differ only slightly in their oligosaccharide linkages but have distinct epidemiological profiles and immunogenicity. Serotypes like 6A/6B are important causes of invasive pneumococcal disease worldwide—including community-acquired pneumonia, meningitis, sepsis, otitis media—and have been included as antigens in conjugate vaccines due to their clinical significance.

Mechanism of action
