Target intelligence / Profile preview
Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 7F is one of over ninety known capsular types of the gram-positive bacterium *S. pneumoniae*. The defining feature of this serotype is its unique capsular polysaccharide structure, which acts as both its main virulence factor and immunological signature. Serotypes like 7F are clinically important because they are associated with invasive pneumococcal diseases such as bacteremia, meningitis, and severe respiratory infections in children and adults. Serotype 7F has been identified as particularly invasive among circulating strains worldwide. The capsule allows the bacteria to evade phagocytosis by host immune cells; thus it plays a central role in pathogenesis. Because of its clinical significance and invasiveness, the type-specific capsule antigen from S. pneumoniae type 7F has been included in modern multivalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) such as VAXNEUVANCE and PREVNAR20—as well as older polysaccharide vaccines like PPSV23—to provide protection against infection caused by this strain. Serotyping for epidemiology or patient monitoring relies on detection of antibodies specific for this capsular form; these responses can be measured following vaccination or natural infection to assess immunity status. While not itself a "target" in the sense used for small-molecule drugs acting on proteins or receptors, S. pneumoniae type 7F's capsule serves as an essential immunological target for antibody-mediated protection via vaccination strategies[1][3].
Vaccines induce production of anti-capsular antibodies that promote opsonization and clearance of the bacteria from the host.
