Target intelligence / Profile preview
The *Streptococcus pneumoniae* type 10A capsular polysaccharide is a serotype-specific carbohydrate antigen that forms the outermost layer (capsule) of the bacterium *S. pneumoniae* serotype 10A. This capsule is a critical virulence factor, protecting the bacterium from host immune responses, particularly by interfering with opsonophagocytic clearance mechanisms. The capsule’s structure and composition are unique to each serotype, resulting in significant immunological diversity and specificity. As a vaccine target, it induces active immunity against *S. pneumoniae* serotype 10A infections by stimulating the production of antibodies that target this specific capsule structure.
Induces actively acquired immunity specifically against infections caused by *S. pneumoniae* expressing the type 10A capsule through generation of anti-capsule antibodies that facilitate bacterial clearance upon exposure/infection
