Overview
The Streptococcus pneumoniae type 14 capsular polysaccharide (CPS-14) is a serotype-specific carbohydrate polymer that forms the outermost layer (capsule) of the bacterium *S. pneumoniae*. This capsule is a major virulence factor, protecting the bacterium from phagocytosis by host immune cells and playing a critical role in its ability to cause disease. CPS-14 consists of repeating tetrasaccharide units composed primarily of galactose and N-acetylglucosamine residues. It is a key antigen used in pneumococcal vaccines to elicit protective antibody responses.
