The *Streptococcus pneumoniae* type 15B capsular polysaccharide (CPS) is a serotype-specific carbohydrate polymer that forms the outermost layer of the bacterium. This capsule is a critical virulence factor, protecting the organism from host immune responses and playing a central role in its ability to cause disease. It shields *S. pneumoniae* from phagocytosis, inhibits complement pathways, and impairs recognition by Toll-like receptors. Type 15B refers to one specific structural variant among the numerous pneumococcal serotypes. Capsular polysaccharides are major targets for current pneumococcal vaccines. However, vaccine protection is limited to included serotypes, making monitoring emerging types like 15B important.
Vaccines induce antibodies that opsonize the polysaccharide, promoting phagocytosis and clearance of the bacteria.
