Streptococcus pneumoniae type 17F capsular polysaccharide

Molecular classification
Polysaccharide, Capsular Polysaccharide
01

Overview

The Streptococcus pneumoniae type 17F capsular polysaccharide (CPS) is the dominant surface structure and primary virulence factor of this bacterium. It protects the organism from host immune responses, particularly by interfering with opsonophagocytic clearance. The CPS is highly immunogenic and forms the basis for serotype-specific immunity. It consists of repeating oligosaccharide units assembled by glycosyltransferases via a Wzx/Wzy-dependent polymerization pathway. Variations in the genes responsible for capsule synthesis account for structural diversity among different capsular types. CPS is targeted by current pneumococcal vaccines, and purified CPS is used as antigens in conjugate vaccines, in development/validation of diagnostic assays and for epidemiological surveillance studies.
