Streptococcus pneumoniae type 19A capsular polysaccharide

Molecular classification
Polysaccharide, Vaccine Antigen
01

Overview

The Streptococcus pneumoniae type 19A capsular polysaccharide is a specific carbohydrate antigen found on the surface of S. pneumoniae bacteria classified as serotype 19A. This molecule forms part of the bacterium’s capsule, which is a major virulence factor enabling immune evasion and contributing to invasive pneumococcal diseases such as pneumonia, meningitis, and bacteremia. It acts as an immunodominant antigen that elicits protective antibody responses in humans. Serotype 19A has become particularly important due to its high potential for causing invasive disease (IPD), increased rates of antimicrobial resistance, and genetic plasticity. After introduction of earlier pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCV7), which did not include serotype 19A, this serotype became more prevalent due to "serotype replacement". Inclusion in newer vaccines (such as PCV13) has led to significant reductions in disease caused by this serotype.
