Overview
The capsular polysaccharide (CPS) of Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 20 is a major virulence factor that protects the bacterium from host immune responses, particularly phagocytosis. It is a serotype-specific repeating oligosaccharide used as an antigen in pneumococcal vaccines to induce protective immunity against S. pneumoniae type 20 infections. Immunity is serotype-specific, meaning protection against type 20 does not extend to other serotypes.
