The Streptococcus pneumoniae type 33F capsular polysaccharide is a serotype-specific, high-molecular-weight carbohydrate polymer that forms the outermost layer (capsule) of the bacterium S. pneumoniae serotype 33F. This capsule is a critical virulence factor, enabling the bacterium to evade host immune responses. It is an important target for vaccine development and epidemiological surveillance. Immunization with purified or conjugated form induces production of anti-capsule antibodies that promote opsonophagocytosis and bacterial clearance. Serotype replacement following widespread vaccine use has led to increased prevalence of non-vaccine types like type 33F. Surveillance for emerging variants is essential for ongoing public health efforts.
