Target intelligence / Profile preview
The Streptococcus pneumoniae type 5 capsular polysaccharide is a serotype-specific surface carbohydrate structure found on the outer layer of S. pneumoniae bacteria. This capsule is a critical virulence factor, enabling the bacterium to evade host immune responses, particularly by interfering with opsonophagocytic clearance mechanisms. The type 5 capsular polysaccharide is also the antigenic component used in certain pneumococcal vaccines for active immunization against diseases such as pneumococcal pneumonia and bacteremia.
