The Streptococcus pneumoniae type 6B capsular polysaccharide is a serotype-specific carbohydrate polymer that forms the outermost layer of the bacterium. This capsule is covalently attached to the cell wall peptidoglycan and serves as a dominant surface structure and a critical virulence factor, primarily by protecting the bacterium from phagocytosis by host immune cells. The capsular polysaccharide is highly immunogenic and forms the basis for serotype-specific immunity and is the primary target of current pneumococcal vaccines. The purified type 6B capsular polysaccharide has been used as an antigenic component in both plain-polysaccharide and protein-conjugate pneumococcal vaccines, like Prevnar13.
