The Streptococcus pneumoniae type 8 capsular polysaccharide is a serotype-specific, high-molecular-weight carbohydrate polymer that forms the outermost layer of the bacterium. This capsule is a major virulence factor, protecting S. pneumoniae from phagocytosis by host immune cells. The capsule is highly immunogenic and serves as the primary target for current pneumococcal vaccines. Purified type 8 capsular polysaccharide antigen has been used in vaccine formulations such as Pneumovax 23, Prevnar 20, and Capvaxive for active immunization against diseases caused by this serotype. Capsule synthesis genes are located in a dedicated region called the cps locus. Type 8 strains are associated with invasive pneumococcal diseases such as pneumonia and bacteremia. It is used in vaccine development to induce protective immunity against S. pneumoniae infections caused by type 8 strains.
