Overview

Streptococcus salivarius is a Gram-positive, alpha-hemolytic, facultative anaerobic bacterium that serves as a primary colonizer of the human oral cavity and gut shortly after birth (PubMed: 22843477). While it is generally a beneficial commensal and is frequently marketed as a probiotic (e.g., strain K12) to prevent streptococcal pharyngitis and halitosis by producing inhibitory salivaricins, it can transition into an opportunistic pathogen (NIH: PMC3203673). In clinical settings, S. salivarius is most notably associated with late-onset neonatal sepsis, meningitis, and infective endocarditis, typically following mucosal barrier disruption or in patients with underlying cardiac abnormalities (NCBI: NBK470461). Because S. salivarius is a whole organism rather than a specific molecular receptor, it is not a 'target' in the traditional biochemical sense; rather, its various cellular components—such as the cell wall and ribosomes—are targeted by broad-spectrum or narrow-spectrum antibiotics during infection (StatPearls: NBK541076). Biotech interest primarily focuses on its use as a delivery vehicle for therapeutic proteins or as a competitive exclusion agent in the oral microbiome.
