Overview

Streptococcus is a genus of Gram-positive, nonmotile, nonsporeforming, catalase-negative cocci that typically occur in pairs or chains. Many species are facultative anaerobes, and some are obligate anaerobes. They are classified based on hemolysis patterns, carbohydrate composition of cell wall antigens (Lancefield classification), and molecular taxonomy. Pathogenic species cause a variety of diseases, including pharyngitis, pneumonia, dental caries, and neonatal sepsis. Some species are used industrially for fermentation processes. Virulence factors enable pathogenic streptococci to evade host defenses and cause disease. Recent genomic studies have clarified evolutionary relationships within the genus.
