Streptococcus thermophilus is a gram-positive, non-motile, non-spore-forming lactic acid bacterium belonging to the viridans group streptococci[1][2]. It is a facultative anaerobe commonly used as a starter culture in the production of yogurt and cheese due to its ability to rapidly ferment lactose into lactic acid and contribute desirable texture and flavor characteristics through exopolysaccharide synthesis[4]. While widely regarded as safe for use in food products and supplements—even during pregnancy—there are rare reports of adverse events such as sepsis among highly vulnerable populations including immunocompromised individuals or premature infants[1][2][5]. There are no known drugs that specifically target this species nor established biomarkers for patient selection related to its use.
