Striatal neural circuits" consist of complex networks of neurons within the striatum, integrating signals from the cortex, thalamus, and midbrain to regulate motor control, reward, learning, and various cognitive processes[1][6][13][16]. The principal cellular components include medium spiny neurons (MSNs)—which express dopaminergic receptors and segregate into direct and indirect pathways—and interneurons (cholinergic, GABAergic), each with distinct inputs and functional roles[3][6][9]. Striatal circuits serve as the entry point to the basal ganglia, a major system orchestrating voluntary movement and reinforcement learning[1][7][16]. These circuits are implicated in several neurological and psychiatric disorders, underpinning both normal and pathological behaviors, and are increasingly considered in neuromodulation therapies, though they are not themselves individual molecular drug targets[5][11][12][13][17].
