Stroke volume is the volume of blood expelled from either the left or right ventricle of the heart during each systole (contraction). It is calculated as the difference between the end-diastolic volume (EDV) and the end-systolic volume (ESV). Stroke volume is a key determinant of cardiac output (CO), which is calculated as CO = heart rate × stroke volume. Normal values in adults are typically 60–100 mL per beat. Stroke volume is regulated primarily by preload (ventricular filling), afterload (vascular resistance), and contractility (myocardial strength). Stroke volume is a crucial clinical indicator used in the assessment of cardiac function and in the diagnosis and management of cardiovascular diseases but is not a drug target or molecular entity.
