Structural maintenance of chromosomes 5 pseudogene (also known as LOC100421160, ENSG00000255437, or AC023538.1) is a non-protein-coding pseudogene related to the structural maintenance of chromosomes 5 (SMC5) gene in humans[4][7][5]. Unlike true protein-coding genes, pseudogenes like this do not encode a functional protein[8]. While SMC5 has roles in chromatin structure, DNA repair, and genome stability, the pseudogene itself lacks known direct biological roles or therapeutic targeting relevance.
