A structure-directing agent (SDA) is a chemical species, typically an organic cation or molecule, used in the synthesis of microporous and mesoporous materials such as zeolites and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). According to the International Zeolite Association, these agents function by organizing inorganic building blocks into specific three-dimensional frameworks through non-covalent interactions like hydrogen bonding and van der Waals forces (Corma et al., 2004, 'Nature'). In the context of pharmacology and drug discovery, a structure-directing agent is not a biological receptor, enzyme, or therapeutic target within the human body. Instead, it is a tool in materials science used to engineer the architecture of materials that may eventually serve as drug delivery vehicles or catalysts. Because it lacks a biological role, there are no associated diseases, clinical biomarkers, or therapeutic drugs that target it in a physiological setting. Its primary utility remains in industrial and laboratory chemical synthesis (Davis et al., 2002, 'Nature').
