Overview

Structured non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) are a diverse class of RNA molecules that do not encode proteins but instead function through their specific secondary and tertiary structures. These RNAs can form complex folded motifs, which may be interspersed within larger transcripts or induced upon binding to particular ligands. Their biological roles often depend on these stable structures, which facilitate interactions with proteins, nucleic acids, or other cellular components. They participate in a wide range of cellular processes including regulation of gene expression, chromatin remodeling, and scaffolding for ribonucleoprotein particle assembly. Alterations in structured non-coding RNA expression/function have been implicated in various diseases.
