The transcript is termed "divergent" due to its orientation opposite the nearby *STX5* gene, indicating it originates from bidirectional promoter activity. Divergent transcription is a widespread phenomenon involving the production of non-coding RNAs from promoters and enhancers, and is thought to contribute to the regulation of gene expression, chromatin state, and possibly genome evolution[1][3][4].
