The subcutaneous tissue extracellular matrix is a heterogeneous, three-dimensional meshwork of proteins, glycoproteins, and polysaccharides surrounding cells of the subcutaneous tissue. It maintains tissue structure and enables transmission of biochemical and biomechanical signals. Its composition includes collagens (mainly types I and III in soft connective tissue), elastin for elasticity, fibronectin and laminin for cell adhesion, and various proteoglycans for hydration and resilience. It regulates migration, proliferation, and differentiation of embedded cells, mediates wound healing and tissue repair, and plays critical roles in many disease processes when its balance is disrupted. This entity should *not* be considered a canonical molecule or receptor target for drug discovery or molecular targeting; instead, focus on its individual protein components or matrix-modifying enzymes for pharmacological intervention.
