Overview

Submaxillary gland androgen-regulated protein 3A (SMR3A) is a secreted, proline-rich protein expressed predominantly in the salivary gland and potentially some other tissues. It may participate in local protection or detoxification mechanisms, possibly via endopeptidase inhibition, and has also been predicted to regulate sensory perception of pain. The gene is protein-coding and orthologous homologs exist in other mammals. SMR3A is not recognized as a therapeutic target, receptor, enzyme, transporter, transcription factor, or ion channel. Disease associations are limited to observational links with conditions like sialolithiasis and Scheuermann disease, but no pathogenic mechanisms or therapeutic interventions have been described. There are no known drugs, clinical biomarkers, or safety issues directly relevant to SMR3A. The protein is largely characterized by its proline-rich sequence and its possible involvement in protection/detoxification of secretory tissues. In summary, SMR3A is a proline-rich, secreted protein likely involved in salivary gland physiology but not a therapeutic target and not classified within major druggable protein families.
