Submucosal gland mucus glycoprotein secretion is the process by which glands beneath the airway epithelium produce and release mucus rich in glycoproteins, mainly MUC5B. This secretion is essential for maintaining airway hydration, trapping pathogens, supporting mucociliary clearance, and contributing to innate lung defense. Dysregulation of this process is implicated in diseases like cystic fibrosis and chronic bronchitis.
Secretion is stimulated by muscarinic agonists, substance P, vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) via neural control. Proteases such as neutrophil elastase can also induce rapid degranulation.
