Overview

The submucosal tissue at the ureterovesical junction refers to the connective tissue layer found beneath the urothelial lining (mucosa) at the junction where the ureter inserts into the urinary bladder (the ureterovesical or vesicoureteric junction, UVJ/VUJ). This anatomical zone includes connective tissue and small vessels that support both the mucosal surface and the complex muscle layers involved in the "valve" mechanism that prevents the backflow (reflux) of urine. This structure is not a druggable protein, enzyme, or receptor, but defects or diseases involving this tissue (such as scarring, fibrosis, or developmental anomalies) can play a significant role in urological conditions such as vesicoureteral reflux and junctional obstruction, contributing to infections and possible kidney damage[1][2][3][4][6]. There are currently no direct drugs or biomarkers targeting the submucosal tissue of the UVJ, and references to this structure are strictly anatomical rather than molecular or pharmacological in nature.
