Sucrase-isomaltase is a bifunctional enzyme complex located on the brush border of the small intestine, essential for carbohydrate digestion. It hydrolyzes sucrose, maltose, isomaltose, and starch-derived oligosaccharides into absorbable monosaccharides (glucose and fructose). Mutations in the SI gene can lead to Congenital Sucrase-Isomaltase Deficiency (CSID).
