The sulfatase modifying factor 2 pseudogene is a nonfunctional DNA segment derived from the ancestral SUMF2 gene. Pseudogenes like this retain sequence homology with the parent protein-coding gene but have lost the ability to produce a functional protein due to disabling mutations such as frame shifts or premature stop codons. Such pseudogenes are common in the genome, often considered "junk DNA," although some may have regulatory roles at the RNA level. This particular pseudogene has not been reported to have any functional significance, disease association, nor is it considered a therapeutic target[2][5][3][8].
