Sulfate anion transporter 1 (SLC26A1) is a member of the solute carrier (SLC26) protein family, functioning as a sodium-independent, electroneutral anion exchanger primarily expressed in the liver, kidney, brain, and intestine. SLC26A1 mediates bidirectional transport of sulfate, oxalate, chloride, bicarbonate, and thiosulfate ions across epithelial cell membranes to maintain systemic sulfate and oxalate balance. Loss-of-function mutations or deficiencies of SLC26A1 lead to impaired sulfate reabsorption, resulting in hyposulfatemia, increased urinary sulfate excretion, and predisposition to kidney stones, skeletal deficiencies, and other metabolic disorders. SLC26A1 is thus a recognized therapeutic target for potential intervention in conditions of sulfate dysregulation and nephrolithiasis.
Inhibitors: Block anion exchange/transport function, e.g., DIDS competitively inhibits sulfate anion uptake. Potential modulation: Hypothetical future small molecules may restore function in loss-of-function mutants or regulate activity for therapeutic benefit.
