Overview

Sulfatide is a type of sulfoglycosphingolipid, specifically a 3-O-sulfogalactosylceramide, consisting of a ceramide backbone linked to a sulfated galactose sugar[1][4]. It is a major constituent of the myelin sheath produced by oligodendrocytes and Schwann cells in the central and peripheral nervous systems, respectively[1][3][4]. Sulfatide is also present on the plasma membrane of many eukaryotic cells and functions in various cellular processes including myelin formation and maintenance, regulation of protein trafficking, cell adhesion, and cell signaling[1][4].
