Sulfonylurea receptor 2A (SUR2A) is a large transmembrane protein that forms part of the ATP-sensitive potassium channel complex in the heart and other tissues. It acts as the regulatory subunit, binding and hydrolyzing ATP to control the opening and closing of the channel in response to cellular metabolic status. SUR2A is encoded by the ABCC9 gene and is a member of the ABC transporter family. It is the molecular target of drugs such as sulfonylureas, which regulate channel activity and downstream cell excitability. Mutations in SUR2A are implicated in certain cardiovascular diseases and may contribute to altered drug responses. Drugs targeting SUR2A modulate its ability to control the flow of potassium ions, which directly affects cell membrane polarization and protection from metabolic stress.
