Target intelligence / Profile preview
Sulfotransferase family 1A member 4 (SULT1A4) is a cytosolic enzyme that catalyzes the transfer of a sulfo group from 3'-phosphoadenosine-5'-phosphosulfate (PAPS) to phenolic monoamines (e.g., dopamine, epinephrine, norepinephrine, serotonin), phenolic and catechol drugs, as well as some thyroid hormones[1][5][7]. It plays a significant role in the metabolism and inactivation or activation of catecholamine neurotransmitters and xenobiotic compounds. SULT1A4 shares an identical protein sequence with SULT1A3, and their activities are critical for regulating local tissue concentrations of monoamines and in bioactivation or detoxification of exogenous chemicals. Aberrant expression or altered activity of SULT1A enzymes has been implicated in susceptibility to chemical-induced toxicity and certain malignancies, due to their role in the bioactivation of some procarcinogens into DNA-reactive metabolites[2].
Sulfate conjugation of xenobiotics, hormones, and neurotransmitters, facilitating their elimination or changing their biological activity. Some drugs require SULT1A-mediated sulfation for bioactivation, detoxification, or conversion to reactive metabolites[1][2][5]
