Overview

SUMO2 pseudogene 10 (SUMO2P10) is classified as a pseudogene derived from the functional SUMO2 (Small Ubiquitin-like Modifier 2) gene. Pseudogenes are non-coding sequences that arise from duplication or retrotransposition events and typically do not produce functional proteins. Many pseudogenes, including those for SUMO2, may retain sequence similarity to their parent gene but lack the ability to encode a functional protein, often due to disabling mutations or lack of regulatory elements[4][5]. While the SUMO2 gene encodes an important post-translational modifier protein involved in nuclear transport, transcriptional regulation, apoptosis, and protein stability, SUMO2 pseudogenes such as SUMO2P10 do not play a direct role in these processes[3][4]. Some research suggests that certain SUMO2 pseudogenes may contribute to regulatory or decoy functions at the RNA level, but this has not been shown for SUMO2P10 specifically[5][4].
